There is nothing to celebrate about the rubber duck

A recent article (Letter from Hong Kong: Art auction hub celebrates the duck) reports Hong Kong’s bourgeoning art scene. While many of the events reported happened to coincide in a slot within few weeks, the author seems to have missed out the fact that these vibrant art (business) activities are largely driven by demands from Mainland China.

What we should be talking about here is how to bring Hong Kong’s art standards up to par, or be at least as good as those happening in cities such as Beijing and Shanghai. If Hong Kong still wants to maintain its status as what the author calls the ‘art auction hub’, they’d better get thinking fast, and really really hard.
