Was it an attempted rape?

shakeHad this debate about whether Caliban tried to rape Miranda in The Tempest.

To my disappointment, the bard seemed to have suggested so. But then the problem – as always with Shakespeare – is that whether it is fair to call that an attempted rape, for Caliban puts it ever so shrewdly:

O ho, O ho! would’t had been done!
Thou didst prevent me; I had peopled else
This isle with Calibans.

How rightly so! If that presumptuous Prospero thinks that he has the sole proprietorship to his precious idiotic daughter, so be he. But what does he intend to do with that piece of clueless creature of a virgin? Continue reading →
